038 A very extensive whinstone quarry the Stone of which is chiefly used for repairing the Parish and County roads. It is wrought from a face of about 30 feet perpendicular and presents very curious and remarkable Strata, the top 10 ft [feet] being nearly horizontal then afterwards curving in almost every direction, Sometimes making nearly a complete circle. The Stone is of a bluish colour interspersed with Streams of white. Crystals of quartz of a purpleish colour are very numerous in it. Property of the Marquis of Ailsa.
