There are Six or Seven Carpet Factories in the town, Some of them very expensive, and manufacture three Classes of Carpets. viz The Brussels Carpet, The Wilton Carpet and Scotch Carpet, there are also a Calico factory, Damask Linen, Cotton etc. Factory, Several Spinning Mills (Woollen) Seven or eight Print Works, five or Six Tanneries and Some SKinneries, five or Six Bonnet Manufactories, (The Kilmarnock Bonnets) for which the town had gained a notoriety, both in Civil and Military life; also 4 Foundries, two Ale & Porter Breweries, & Extensive Gas WorKs. There are two Weekly Markets, which are held on Tuesday & Friday, and four Annual fairs.
" The Origin of Kilmarnock, like that of " many other towns of importance, is "involved in Considerable obscurity; "and Scarcely any thing regarding its "ancient history can be gathered from "the various Statistical Works in which " it is mentioned, That it is a place of "great Antiquity, however, Seems to be " the general opinion, It is stated by "Some Writers that, So far back as the " year 322, it was the residence of a "Saint Marnoc or Marnock, from whom " its name is derived. But it is more
"probable that the Saint Settled here "about the end of the Sixth or the
"beginning of the Seventh Century,
"when Some of the early preachers of
"Christianity, who had been educated
"at I-colum-kill, under the Columba,
"established places of Religious Worship
" in different parts of our Island, Here
"according to tradition, St. Marnock
" founded a Church, and hence, in all
" likelihood, the Origin of the town; for
" those who were seeking or had "enjoyed his holy instructions Would
"naturally incline to Settle at or near
"the hallowed Scene of his labours. It is
"also said that he was interred here
" within the precincts of the ground he
"had consecrated.
