Several of the Streets are quite modern, have a neat Appearance, the houses presenting fronts of polished freestone, abounds in good and elegant Shops, and exhibit a fair display of public buildings. - It is divided ecclesiastically [into] two parishes, viz. the High Church and Low Church parishes, the latter is the landward parish, [there] are four places of public Worship connected with the Establishment, one of these a Quoad Sacra Church, Three Free Churches, three U.P. [United Presbyterian] Churches, One Reformed Presbyterian Ch. [Church], One Evangelical union Ch. [Church], an Independant Chapel, a Roman Catholic Church and an Episcopal Church. Some of these are very handsome Structures it also Contains Six Branch Offices of different Banks, A Town's hall or Building, Courthouse, Prison, good Hotels and Several Inns and Taverns there are also Ten Schools, One of which is the Collegiate School or Academy, the other nine Consist of Free Church School, Ragged & Parochial Board Board School, Free School and Industrial School and private adventure Schools, also a Public Library some Circulating Libraries, Mechanical Institute, an Athenaeum, and two Weekly newspapers; the Mechanic Institute and Athenaeum, are Rooms [ready] for the purpose. - Kilmarnock is the Well Known Seat of very important manufactures, Chiefly the department of Carpets, Printed Shawls, Bonnets or Capes and Leather, its advantages as for position facilities, are abundance of Coal, healthiness of Climate, populousness of neighbourhood, and the [Closeness ?] through it, or at its Side, of two Considerable Streams, the Kilmarnock and Irvine Rivers.- [There] [continued over]
