012 | An eminence in the vicinity of Dunlop, rising gradually on the South & west, but on the E.N. [East North] & N. [North] West sides is very steep & in some places rocky. On the summit - from which an extensive view of the surrounding country is obtained - a Castle is said, formerly to have stood. No vestage of it is now to be seen, but on the east side of the Hill, the remains of what appears to have been a Trench are yet distinctly visible, abt. [about] 3 chains west from this, there is a slight hollow, but whether it has been connected with the Trench cannot now be seen, as the land intervening has long since been levelled and cultivated. |

"The only other building that has any claim to antiquity is a small vaulted chamber in the church yard, in which Hans Hamilton, the Minister of Dunlop, already mentioned, and his wife, are buried" - New Statis. [Statistical] Acct. [Account] p.294 - It is also mentioned in "Paterson's History of Ayr" as being having been the burial place of Hans Hamilton, who appears to have been the first Protestant Minister of this parish - having entered on the charge in 1563 -
