51Parish of Dunlop
"At the foot of Barr Hill, on the right bank of the Glazert, stands now, with only one exception, the most ancient building in the parish - Aiket Castle. It is a strong square tower, with a side of thirty feet; it was originally four stories in height, but in modern times, has been reduced to three". "The walls at the base are upwards of seven feet thick". "In ancient times it was surrounded with a moat". Paterson's History.
"Aiket Castle, about a mile South of the church is now the oldest building in the parish. The date of its erection is not exactly known; but as a considerable branch of the Cunninghame family possessed the property of which it was the mansion for some centuries preceding 1700, about which time it passed into other hands, we may assign to it a very respectable antiquity. It consisted originally of a square tower, vaulted on the ground floor, & four or five storeys high". New Statistical Account
