The old Tolbooth or Gaol of Ayr stood prior to 1825 in the Centre of Sandgate Street
"At the date above mentioned it was removed to allow the inhabitants the free use of the Street at its full width - Ayrshire Directory 1851
"The Prison like the old Tolbooth of Edinburgh interlines and almost blocks up one of the principal Streets. - Security is the only Consideration which seems to have gained the attention of those who planned this public nuisance which is not so much the terror of evil-doers as the horror of those who do well"

This is the site of the old Market Cross which Consisted of one upright stone round which the market used formerly to be held prior to its removal to the vicinity of the Corn Exchange there can be no account furnished to show what date it was erected, but it is presumed it must have been at a remote age - it was removed in December 1854 -
