033 [Situation] At the junction of High Street with New Bridge Street.
These are very Extensive handsome and commodious buildings and reflect honour on the Architect. ------The site on which they stand everybody allows is unfavourable for shewing them off to great advantage. They stand on rather a low situation and close to the Street and of Course are not Capable of being viewed as a uniform whole from any Commanding position at a proper distance. ++++++
The Buildings contain an elegant spacious news room and various other departments for towns meetings etc all of which are constructed in such a manner as to be capable of being thrown into one suit of Rooms for public dinners, balls and assemblies on great occasions. The Spire is 226 feet in height said to be about the highest in Scotland and has a bell weighing 22 cwt [hundredweight] of a rich deep toned sound which can be heard at a great distance in Calm weather. The Spire is reckoned very handsome and in Good taste as to architectural decorations & proportions its appearance has a fine effect and is a great ornament to the town.

N.B. These buildings are in the Gr[ecian] style and of the Composite order were founded on the 28th March 1828 and cost about £10,000.
