This Wall is in an excellent state of preservation and quite entire except on part of the east Side - where, however the site can be distinctly traced. -

This Outwork of defence to the Fort can still be distinctly traced it was capable of being filled with water from the River - to which its South side is Contiguous -

"In the year 1177 William the Lion built 2 Castles at once upon the extremities of his Kingdom one at Newcastle to restrain the incursions of the English and the other at Ayr to awe the wild men of Galloway - The castle at Ayr was situate within the present ramparts of the Fort with a northern exposure at the North east extremity of the Fortification The Castle stood on an eminence of Considerable height & Commanded an extensive view of the surrounding Country Traces of this Castle are still to be seen upon the mound not far from the tower of St Johns Ch [Church] buried in the eastern bastion of Cromwells Fort"

The Outside wall of the above mentioned moat its foundations still exist, but a modern Wall has been built on them - part of this wall about 3 chains south of New Church is entirely defaced
