016 | A municipal borough or Burgh of Barony created by Act of Parliament in 1846 (see extract). There is a corporation consisting of a Provost Town Councillors, Treasurer, Bailies etc. The town is built on a well regulated plan and will in the course of a few years be considerably larger than at present. The streets are wider and regular, crossing at right angles to each other. There are two churches in the town, a posting house, two private schools, gas works, docks etc. also two hotels and one or two public houses. It is not a market town. |
