It is a current tradition in the locality that One of the Maclaines of Duard Castle, Mull, while on a predatory excursion in the neighbourhood with a party of his Clansmen, carried away nine of the men of Lunga, who offered him resistance, and left them on this rock to perish, after having previously cut off their thumbs & toes, hence the name which signifies "rock of the thumbs."
