235 | The ruins of the old parish Church of Killean the walls with the exception of the west end, are pretty entire, and that portion retaining the roof is the Largie family burial Vault. The grave yard is still in use as the place of interment for the parishoners, & as the authorities say it had formerly extended on the Kilmory side of the stream or burn, for when cultivating the land many human bones were discovered. "Killean probably derives its name from St. Killean who in the 7 century converted vast numbers of the Eastern Franks from Paganism to Christianity. The denomination of the parish is also very descriptive of the local situation of the old parish church, whose walls, of a Crucial form are still entire, the name in this view compounded of Cil and Abhainn, a river & signifying river churchyard. A small river or rivulet forms the northern boundary, which together with a tributary stream surrounds the site of the church and burial ground." New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] |
