Continued
Mrs. A. Taylor. Castle of Towie-Barclay Mr. T Lawrence Turriff Alexander Gerrard Acrestripe New St. [Statistical] Account 019 purchased by the Earl of Findlator in 1753, and in 1792 it was sold to the trustees of Robert Gordon's Hospital in Aberdeen. In the year 1639, "Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty" appeared in arms among the northern confederates, who opposed the Covenanters. His place of residence, named Balquholly, had been plundered of muskets and carbines by the lairds of Delgaty and Towie. Having obtained the assistance of other gentlemen, he, on the 10th. of May, made an attempt to recover his weapons of war from the house of Towie; but the inmates being aware of their approach, manned the place so effectually that an attack seemed to be hopeless. One man was killed by a shot from the Castle, and this is said to have been the first blood shed by the Covenanters.
