028 | The castle is kept in complete preservation and is the residence of the proprietor Colonel Gordon of Fyvie. It consists of four noble Towers respectively named The Preston's, The Meldrum's, The Seton's and the Gordon's Towers It is believed the present building was preceded by a Castle or Keep of much greater antiquity when the Domain was a royal Chase. It is recorded that Edward 1st of England visited Fyvie Castle in 1296, and a few years after it became one of the royal residences of King Robert Bruce the lands around it being then a hunting-forest. In 1380 Robert 3rd resigned the Castle &c. to his Cousin Sir James de Lindsay and on his demise in 1397 the Castle &c. fell to his Son in Law Sir Henry Preston in 1397 the Castle &c. fell to his Son in Law Sir Henry Preston The oldest Tower of the Castle the S.E. [South East] one is named after this Knight. he died about the year 1433. and one of his daughters brought the property over to the Meldrums who had it for 160 years |

028 | This is the most ancient portion of Fyvie Castle, and is Supposed to have been erected in 1395. It consists of a square block of the Gothic style of architecture, with gun or port holes inserted in the walls. The Tower is turreted and the walls are about 10ft. [feet] in thickness. The figure of the Trumpeter of the Castle at this period is placed on the N.E. [North East] corner of the Tower, in the act of sounding his trumpet in the direction of Tifty, where his sweetheart resided (see old ballad "Tifty's Annie). |

028 | .. the Meldrums who had it for 160 years and of whose family the Tower at the S.W. [South West] takes the name, in which, it is said, is a secret Chamber. Meldrum Tower - This is a square turriculated Tower situated at the S.W. [South West] angle of the Castle completing the number of towers on the South of the building. It has also portholes in connection and is of Gothic architecture. In the bottom of the tower there is an inaccessible chamber with neither [--] window: its only known or supposed use being that assigned in an old plan of a concealment for Arms. It is supposed to have been erected about 1599. |

028 | In 1596 the Setons purchased the property from the Meldrums and in 1597 under the Great Seal the Barony of Fyvie was erected into a free Lordship and on the following year Alexander Seton was created a peer by the name of Lord Fyvie Seton Tower - Is also Gothic but instead of being square like the others is more of a semicircle in form. It is erected over the former or main entrance [-- ] It is turreted and the walls are 8ft. [feet] thick. The arms of the Setons [--] are cut in freestone over the gate. |

028 | In 1622 His Son, Charles succeeded as 2nd Lord Fyvie and James his son suc. [succeeded] as 3rd and last peer who was outlawed in 1690. From 1689 to 1726 the Castle &c. was forfeited to the Crown and then Sold to the 2nd Earl of Aberdeen and down to the present time continued in the possession of Some branch of that family.
