028 In 1644, it is recorded, That the Marques of Montrose on his way from Huntly occupied Fyvie Castle and grounds and finding that the Marques of Argyle with a much larger force making their way after him, Montrose at once removed from the Castle and selected a place for encampment, on a slopping ground of a most favourable position, a little under ½ a mile E. [East] of the Castle. and where he had also the Castle in view, and where he formed a Trench which is still known by Montrose's Trench and the outline of which is still to be Seen on the ground. It is recorded of the Trench "Having the River Ythan on his right and Wood on his left and a deep hollow and a brook ran before him which served as a ditch to break the fury of a charge of horsemen Argyle on his arrival sent a Regiment of foot to draw the Royalists from their stronghold Montrose sent a small trustworth body of his Staff who beat them back with much loss and discredit" It was here, it is said, the Great Montrose taught his Royalists to face and beat double their number of opponents and after a few more of similar engagements, Argyle Shifted his force to the heights of Ardlogie abt. [about] 2 miles NE. [North East] of the Castle - for further particulars Please see Pratt's Buchan &c
"In 1644, Montrose took possession of Fyvie Castle: but not thinking it tenable against the superior force of Argyle, he retired to an eminence a little to the north eastward, which he defended with great bravery for several days, and then marched by night to strathbogie. The entrenchments are still distinctly to be seen, and the ground goes by the name of Montrose Camp. One of Argyle's encampments also on the lands of Ardlogie is still [called the Camp-fold.]
