090 | This castle is very ancient, once the residence of the [Muat] family, until the beginning of the fifteenth century, when a feud arose between the Camerons of Brux and the [Muats] of Abergeldie. The parties met on a hill on the Southern verge of the Don. Called, Drum. Guardrum on the lands of Brux. Cameron had only twelve men, but the treacherous Muat threw two men on each horse; not withstanding the disparity of numbers, the parties engaged with keenness. The two sons of Muat and a gentleman called McFadden, and eleven of Muat's men fell, and were all interred in the heath with Cameron, which ended the line of Brux. He leaving no issue to deplore his loss, but one daughter in her minority, her he intrusted under the Earl of Mar, before he engaged Muat. Catherine Cameron, having attained the age of puberty, was surrounded by admirers; but learning the cause of the father's death, vowed to give her hand to none, but that man who dared reveng the death of her father, which made them fall back. Lord John Forbes of Castle Forbes, had four sons, who sued for the hand of Catherine, but retired on hearing her vow. Robert the second son returning to the pursuit, determined to gain the horse or lose the saddle, to gain her hand, or embark with Cameron. Accordingly, he challenged Muat to meet him on the field of Badenyon, May the 8th. Each leader commanded six hundred men to prevent treachery, when Forbes addressed Muat to this effect: What pitty to dip so many swords in human blood. We will encounter arm to arm, and the soldiers will live in friendship with the victor to which Muat assented with an oath, on an instant they engaged with resolution, and stood firm for some minutes, when Muat resigned his life into the shades. Forbes returned to Kildrumy, and led the blooming virgin to the altar, and fixed their seat at Brux, and from them descends a numerous progeny. [Continued page 132] |
