Mr Henry Esson Balnacraig

Mr George Middleton Balnagowan
James Ogg Esq. Banker Aboyne
081 ; 082 These Ancient "Roads"so far as appears on the Plan are quite visible, terminating to the north at what appears to be small "Camps"or sheltering places: A little west of Knockhuise the Road breaks into two the Southern branch is shortly lost and the western one goes into Plan 11 and there shortly likewise ceases; along their route are what appears to have been simply Stone Walls noted on the traces by red dotted lines and scattered stones: there are no ditches or ramparts hereabouts, all appears to have been the work of some rude people which tradition says were "Picts".
No other Roads, traces of Roads, or tradition of Roads are here except those shewn on the Plan .
The long description in the New Stat Acct [Statistical Account] caused this place to be examined and enquired into with great care, and nothing further than the foregoing can be shown or said.
As to an ancient Road being traceable thro' the Parish, that is wrong decidedly: here & there a small Camp similar to the ones shewn here will appear, and now & then a small piece of An Ancient Road.
Would it not be best to simply write "Pictish Remains"in Old English, embracing all the features as what their original uses were is now a Mystery.
As to their being "Roman Ways"their appearances on the Plans will shew they are not.
