081 ; 082 Along the northern boundary of this Parish are scattered numerous Cairns or Tumuli of various sizes but generally small; they are very numerous around Mulloch Hill and St Muchrieha's Cross, and no doubt mark the sites of Conflicts now forgotten: to give any definite origin to them is impossible, but tradition points to the Parish of Aboyne as the scene of many conflicts between the Picts and Danes. Macbeth the Usurper was likewise put to death near here in Lumphanan Ph. [Parish] where his "Cairn"still remains, so that it may be inferred that their origin & numbers arise from many a now forgotten battle field.
