075 A short distance east of the Bishop's Palace there formerly Stood one of the Ports or gates of the Canonry. It was probably erected about the year 1459 when the palace was rebuilt by Bishop Speirs. It does not appear to have had any Proper name by which it was Known, Such as two of the Ports had viz Cluny's Port, and Chaplains Port.

Cross Macfarlane's Collections for the Shires of Aberdeen & Banff 075 Nothing is known relative to this antitiquity, than what is mentioned by the only authority quoted which runs thus - This Cathedral had the privilege of a sanctuary, or girth, and had a Girth-Cross, on the Bishop's dovecote green which was a sure refuge for manslayers, or such as had committed slaughter by pure accident, and misfortune, without any malice or design.
