075 | The Bishop's Palace which Stood at the east end of the Cathedral Consisted of a quadrangular Court of buildings, having a small turret at each of the angles, there was a covered passage from the Palace to the Cathedral. During the Revolution it fell a prey to the Covenanters, and when the English occupied the town of Aberdeen in 1651 they demolished the buildings and used the Stones in the erection of fortifications on the Castlehill. The Palace does not seem to have been an extensive Structure nor of much splendour as appears from the Catalogue of its furniture found in it after the death of Bishop Gordon in 1518 when the Church was in its most flourishing Condition. The gardens and pleasure ground attached to it seem to have been both beautiful and extensive. The Palace was rebuilt by Bishop Spens about the year 1459, the original edifice having been destroyed in the year 1336. |
