[Page] 46Forsinard, Side School. - No offices, and no pure water nearer than
the river.
GOLSPIE - Golspie - An old site, and not a good playground till
lately. 2 large rooms; would pass for ventilation, but flap ventilators do
not always work. Infants' room very crowded, and bad air - at times
60 to 90, where only 47 should be - dangerous to health if longer con-
tinued, but new additions are proposed. Interior cleanly, but desks
and woodwork need cleaning more frequently. No drinking water
near enough, and this is not creditable for such an important school.
Offices in a very bad position, and not cleaned so frequently as should
be. Their removal is contemplated soon. This needs to be done, or
some improvement quickly effected, as also increased accommodation
for infants' department.
KILDONAN. - Helmsdale. - A mixed up building, much patched
in architecture. Ventilation bad all over, and overcrowding very
conspicuous; very much so in east end. Ventilation flaps do not
work properly. 140 pupils where space for only about 90, and in
another room 90 where only half that number should be. Interior
fairly clean. Offices clean, and urinal also—the only one in county.
Needs. - Overcrowding to be remedied, and also the water should be
taken into lobbies by pipe from main, as meantime only what a pail
can contain is at hand.
Kildonan. - ln a boggy situation. Ventilation good, and interior
clean; also the offices. Water is 350 yards off. It should be
brought nearer.
Kinbrace. - New school, in good position; clean and tidy, but
again too deep a pit for excreta is found here. Needs to lessen size
of pit, and bring better water nearer, as only a surface well used at
present.
Badenloch - a Side School - also visited. It has no offices.
LAIRG. - Lairg. - Good site, and playground lately improved. Space
sufficient, and excellent class-room lately added. Well lighted and
warmed. Ventilation good, by means of flaps. Office pit too deep.
The water supply in pipe at school needs sharp looking after to keep
it free from surface or manurial pollution near its intake half a mile
off, in a field situated on side of a hill. The analysis of this water was
very bad at one time; but after improvements were carried out it is
hoped that causes of contamination were removed.
Shinness. - Good site, but very close and stuffy, as ventilation not
good. Windows don't open properly. Floor space for only 39-44,
and with a roll of 60, this is not satisfactory. Interior clean.
Water in a field drain. Seems good water, but not protected enough.
Offices very clean and sweet. Needs enlarging, [which could be done
by absorbing dwelling-house], as it is certainly overcrowded some
days.
Overscaig - Side School and meeting-house. No offices. Very
clean and tidy.

LOTH. - Loth. - Situation good. Ventilation excellent. Offices and
interior cleanly. Water in a pipe at school, and from a source 400
yards away from cultivated ground. No suggestions.
ROGART. - Blarich. - New school in excellent position, and kept
cleanly. Water in tap in playground, and from pure source.
Rhilochan. - Fair position for site. No suggestions. Ventilation
not on good system, but not defective, because of the small number
of pupils. Offices clean, but water for the children is not good; is
got out of a quagmire or bog near. Needs improved water, and also
a drain at back of school to cut off surface and subsoil damp.
Rogart. - Ventilation not bad, but not on good system, as no plan
for directly letting air out; it diffuses through somehow. Windows
don't open properly. Whitewashed once in two years. Walls are
damp at rainy seasons, as no rhones on school or house. This should
be improved, as well as ventilators and windows.
Achnaluachrach. - Side School. State of cleanliness is good.
T0NGUE. - Melness. - Site badly chosen. Had been a church at one
time. Though very lofty, yet ventilation is shocking, especially in
infant room, which has floor space for only 27, and yet 65 were pre-
sent at date of my visit. Air space is here seen to be no true test of
sufficiency, though in figures it should suffice for 53 pupils. Some
times 85 present in summer. Air is very stuffy and foetid even with
open windows. Ventilation very defective, and though Tobin tubes are
in walls, they have lids on them and are of course useless. More-
over, no outer openings to act as inlet to Tobin tubes were ever made.
Roof louvre boards do not act - they are stuffed up. Walls are
quite damp, especially after rain. Play-ground is just a puddle, and
impassable at times. Superadded to all this there is no proper supply
of water for drinking: it is a mere driblet, and not the purest
quality by any means. Offices are fairly clean, but evidently not
much used. Dwelling-house suffers from much same causes and is
very damp, and its inner walls reeking with moisture in rainy
weather. Needs improvement in every department, and that quickly.
The necessary improvements have been decided on, but not yet
carried out, and supervision will be required to see that when they
begin they will be a satisfactory remedy for such a list of defects.
Meantime lids should be removed from Tobin tubes, and a proper
supply of water be got, and, if possible, to transfer some of the
infants to other rooms or another place.
Skerray. - ln a good position, but too far from water. Ventila-
tion is by flaps, and space all required at times. Office pit too deep.
Needs a shallower pit for excreta, and the introduction to or near
school of a pure water.
Tongue. - Surroundings lately improved. Cleanly outside and
inside buildings. Flaps of ventilators not always open, and here
again the curiosity of Tobin tubes with shut lids is found. Class-
room close at times. Water in tap not far from school, and seemingly
good. Needs improved ventilation, and to take lids off Tobin tubes,
