"Barncorkrie" is the name of the Farm House (see Page 12) and Portencorkrie (without Bay affixed) of the Bay or
Harbour. I am given to understand that Korkrie means (in Gaelic) a place where the dead body of a King has been
found or buried, hence Barncorkrie, i.e. the Hill of Corkrie, and Portencorkrie i.e. The Port of Corkrie.

[Situation] At the S.E. [South East] Side of Coreholm Hill & about 1 7/8 miles West of Drummore.
A deep Glen of the farms of Coreholm Hill & Clanyard the side of which are covered with furze and underwood in the bottom of the Glen runs a Small Stream to its influx with Clanyard Bay. It derives its name from a very deep hole at the corner of a small Garden where there are some old trees of a large size. Tradition of the Country people says the Gordons of Clanyard had formerly a Castle here. |

A large hill of an oval shape on the farm of High Kildonan the soil of which is chiefly arable land, on it is a Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Station called by the Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Party "Drumore Hill". This hill is divided into several small holdings or forms. The property of the Earl of Stair.
In a fields on the West Side of this hill Stone graves have been met with it is said that formerly a Ch. [Church] and graveyard stood her but no Trace of it can be Seen now. the field has been in Cultivation during the memory of the oldest inhabitant.
This is supposed to have derived its name from a Chapel &c which stood near this. See Statistical Acct. [Account] 1841 page 199 |

A Small Sea port Village on the Eastern Coast of the Parish of Kirkmaiden with about 300 of a Population, the greater part of which are Agricultural Labourers The houses in the village are of a good description, from one to two Stories high. It is well supplied with Grocers, Drapers, Spirit reatilers etc., in it is a Free Church and a school house (built in the year 1843) the Church affords accommodation for about 500 persons, And the Average attendance of scholars at school is about 70 or 80 (The Parish Church and School are situated about 3/4 of a mile north of the village). has also a good Harbour which admits vessels of considerable burden. It is Situate about 18 miles South of Stranraer, to & from which there is a regular Communication by Carrier. A Post Office has also been established in it the mail is conveyed daily by a Car three days of the week carries Passengers. This Village is the property of the Earl of Stair. |

It was partly erected by the congregation & partly by the Free Church building fund at the North end of it is a school ho. [house] attached the average attendance of scholars is about 70 or 80. The Teachers Salary is £20 from the Free Ch. [Church] Education fund together with the Scholars fees. The Minister of the Church is the Reverend John Lamb his Stipend is £150 paid by the Free Ch. [Church] Sustentation fund and partly by the Congregation. |

the walls of which are ivy-clad, and presents a very antique appearance, it is Known as Drummore Castle

A small round clump or mound evidently the remains of one of the ancient Cairns on which there had been large flags of Stones dug up, which was placed on edge with a flat cover over them & had in all probability been a burying ground. The most of it has been taken away by cultivation. the remaining part of it is a very prominent object as it is situate on the summit of a sharp conical hill. And takes its name from the small farm on which it Stands being Called Aine which is now let with Cairngarroch. The property of the Earl of Stair. Near to the West Side of this place is a Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Station] called by the Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Party 'Mary Port.' |

A small Sea Port village on the Eastern Coast of the Parish of KirKmaiden. about 18 miles South of Stranraer, to and from which there is a regular communication by Carrier, in it is a Penny Post Office Established, the Mail is Conveyed daily by a spring Car, Carrying three days of the week Passengers including the mail. The houses are of Superior description from one to two Stories in height. It is supplyed with Grocers, Drapers, Spirit retailers etc. (In it is a Free church built in the year 1843.) The population amounts to about 300 Persons. the greater part of which are Labourers. the Parish church is about ¾ of a mile from the Village. It has a good harbour, which admits Vessels of Considerable burden, and is the property of the Earl of Stair. |

The most of this place has been taken away by Cultivation What of it still remains is A very prominent object as it is Situated on the Summit of Sharp Conical sloped little hill. And taKes its name Cairn Aine from the Small farm on which it Stands being called Aine But which is now let with Cairngarroch & is the property of Earl of Stair |
