034 This name applies to the highest portion of land South of the village of the Isle of Whithorn and which forms a complete promontory, on its north side is the remains of an entrenchment or fosse extending from the declivity on one side to the declivity on the other forming the segment of a circle. On the highest point of the Head land is a small square building of stone and lime about 10 feet square and about 14 feet high locally called "the Cairn" on which is a pole or flag staff used for hoisting flags for signals to vessels at sea this flag staff is become a Trig [Trigonometrical] ◬ [point] and called by Trigl [Trigonometrical] Party "Whithorn Signal Pole".
