SAINT NINIAN CHURCH ( IN RUINS) Saint Ninians Church
Saint Ninians Church
Isaac McConnell Isle of Whithorn
Peter Black Isle of Whithorn
034 This name applies to an ancient ruin of small dimensions, standing in position East & west the walls of which are much delapidated, in the east there seems to have been a large window over which was a pointed arch which is still entire. This Church is supposed by Mr McConnell of the Isle of Whithorn to have been founded by St. Ninian as early as the 4th Century but the freshness of its walls and the entire state of the ruin would go far to supercede the idea that this was the first Church built for Christian worship in Scotland. It is however of great antiquity and nothing but local conjecture can be obtained in the Neighbourhood Concerning it.
