The Burgh is governed by a Provost, two Baillies & fifteen Councillors who decide trifling matters those of weightier import being decided by the Sheriff. It unites with Stranraer, Wigtown & Newgalloway in sending a Member to Parliament its population in 1841 was 510.
Whithorn boasts of very high antiquity its first Charter being granted by King Robert Bruce [January] 26th and confirmed by James 1st 25.10.1424 from which time it appears to have received the Sanction of Succeeding Monarchs until finally confirmed in the 23rd Reign of James 4th.

[Continued] in the Kingdom. In the Church Yard are several large vaults which appear to be the remains of part of the Cathedral. Many of the most distinguished personages including Kings, Queens and the highest nobles visited Whithorn & paid homage to the memory of this remarkable Saint, in 1473 Margaret Queen of James 3rd made a pilgrimage here & James 4th & his Queen during his reign made several pilgrimages to the Sepulchre of the Holy St Ninian. in 1513 the old Earl of Angus (Bell-the-Cat) made a pilgrimage to the reputed relics of Whithorn engaging before he set out to reform all disorders on his way .

[Continued] was the practice of travelling to the shrine of St Ninian in quest of both physical & spiritual good that in spite of all the preachers could inculcate or the famous Sir David Lindsay could write it continued some time after the Reformation & was not effectually put down till an act of Parliament passed in 1581 rendering it illegal. The overthrow of the traffic of Monkery & the factitious attraction of St Ninian's Shrine terminated the social importance of Whithorn,

[Continued] "All these are gone but we may still trace them partly in their foundations, partly as portions of houses, partly as used for building materials or kept as ornaments. The Chancel has been preserved being used by parishioners till of late years as their place of worship. It was built upon the site of much more ancient buildings which had been the crypt as it would seem of an extensive Church for there are large Vaults around of old & rude Masonry which rise higher than the chancel floor. They must have been part of the original Church of St Ninian of the 4th century or built by the Saxons in the 8th Century. (See next page) |

[Continued] "The chancel is a well proportioned beautiful specimen of the early English style.
The SW [South West] door is round and elegantly worked the window pointed of single lights.
In the North wall in the usual place near the E [East] end are two canopied recesses apparently sepulchral ones nearly on the level of the floor, in one of which doubtless St Ninian's body lay. This even is now dismantled. a new building was erected about 20 years ago which is now the place of worship for the Parishioners. the roof & furniture were removed from the old chancel & the mere walls left.

the Free Church the Reformed Presbyterian Church & the Parochial School , there is no Catholic Chapel but occasional meetings are held in an old building formerly a Store room to the Wind Mill situated at the S. [South] End of the Town. It has branch Banks viz : The National Bank of Scotland, The Edinburgh & Glasgow Bank & a Savings Bank also Agencies for several Fire & Life Insurance Companies a Post Office two respectable Inns with numerous Smaller Public houses, it has two Annual Fairs at Midsummer & Lammas the latter of which is nearly discontinued, Monthly Cattle Markets have been established some years except for the months of February & March there are no regular Conveyances established at present but two parties are licensed to Let Cars etc the Burgh is governed by a Provost , two Bailies & fifteen Councellors who decide trifling matters, those of weightier import (See next page) [Continued] |

import being decided by the Sheriff it unites with Stranraer Wigtown & New Galloway in sending a Member to Parliament. - Whithorn boasts of very high antiquity its first Charter being granted by King Robert Bruce January 26:- and confirmed by James 1st 25.10.1424 from which time it appears to have received the Sanction of Succeeding Monarchs until finally confirmed in the 23rd Of James 4th 1.5 1511. This last granted confirmation of the Charter appears to extend the priveledge to the "Priory of our Monastry of Quhitherne and its Convent" |

This Church was erected in 1822 and can accommodate a congregation of 1200. it was erected upon the site of a religious establishment of great extent which flourished here in the fourth century, no authentic records of which have been handed down, the Ministers Salary is paid by the Heritors of the parish according to the feus of the year. it has a gallery on three Sides & is altogether in good repair. |

This ruin Stands on the site of a large and famous Priory of the Premontratensian Order founded by Fergus Lord of Galloway who flourished in the reign of David the First of Scotland & in which Some of the innumerable relics of St Ninian were said to be deposited. on the South West corner of the building is a Saxon Arch. probably

A neat and well built Church in good repair Situated in about the Middle of the Burgh of Whithorn it was Erected by the Congregation of the Reformed Presbyterians in Whithorn A.D 1820 (hence its name) it can accommodate 350 with Seats and about 120 Communicants meet for Divine worship together with about 60 occasional hearers: The Minister is Supported by voluntary Contributions from the Congregation also he has a house to live in which has been erected convenient to the Church by the Said, likewise adjacent to the Church is a Monument . Erected by the Same in the year 1833 to the Memory of the Revd [Reverend] Mr Rowatt and his Successor Revd. [Reverend] Mr McMurtrie as a Testimonial of their Esteem and regard for their exemplary Piety and Zeal in Promoting the Gospel amongst their fellow Men |
