034 | [Situation] On the West Side of the Main Street And about 2 Chains South of The Row. A large modern built structure in good repair with a Steeple, Clock & Bell erected in 1814 & situated on the N.W. [North West] side of the Main Street. it contains a large room used for the Council Meetings etc of the Burgh & two or three apartments used as places of Confinement for criminals previous to their removal to Wigtown at the rear of the premises is a stone built in the wall bearing date 1709 which was removed from an old Jail formerly belonging to the Burgh. |

In Newton Stewart a similar building is not
& Mr McH [McHaffie] ruled that it should therefore
be called Town House - He here writes
it so tho' [though] Corpl [Corporal] Rogers remark is perfectly
correct & in all the towns they say Town Hall.
