The Burgh is governed by a Provost, two Baillies & fifteen Councillors who decide trifling matters those of weightier import being decided by the Sheriff. It unites with Stranraer, Wigtown & Newgalloway in sending a Member to Parliament its population in 1841 was 510.
Whithorn boasts of very high antiquity its first Charter being granted by King Robert Bruce [January] 26th and confirmed by James 1st 25.10.1424 from which time it appears to have received the Sanction of Succeeding Monarchs until finally confirmed in the 23rd Reign of James 4th.
