chalmers Says that the Parish of KirKcowan derived
its name from the church which was dedicated
to St. Keuin, this Saint was an abbot & a Scot who
belonged to the western Isles. There was a church in
Kintyre called Kilcowan which was evidently
dedicated to the Same Saint. caledonia vol. [volume] 3 P. [Page] 433
In the Statl. [Statistical] Account published 1841 the minister of Kirkinner
Parish States. "The popular tradition respecting the name of the parish
(of KirKinner) is as follows. In former times the parish of KirKinner
included in it what now forms the parish of KirKcowan. The clergyman
preached two Sundays at the church in the Southern part of the Parish and the next in a
another place of worship in the northern part of the parish. In those days one was distinguished as
the Inner Kirk hence the name KirKinner; the other was called the outer Kirk which in course
of time was changed to KirKcowan & now forms the parish of that name" |
