016 | [Situation] At the north end of Castle Street - In the eastern part of the town of Stranraer An old building of the castellated Style occupied for Some years past as a prison it is Capable of holding 22 prisoners having 5 cells and a lock ups together with rooms for Stores & accommodation for the Jailer. A new gaol has been lately built which will shortly be occupied instead of this old building. When Simpson wrote an account of Galloway in 1684 there was the ruins of an old chapel stood near it which was called St. John's Chapel and the Castle was called "The Castle of the Chapel" See Chalmers Caledonia P.
