A large Stone about 7 feet lyng, at present lying in the Ground ) until within the last 18 years, it stood upright at the same place it now lies. *A Tradition (current in this locality) states that this was a place for administering Justice, hence the name Law and from this circumstance the Stone was called Craiglaw and from which the place took its name.
*This is very improbable as the name appears to be compounded of a Gaelic and a Saxon word - i.e. "Craig" a rock (Gaelic) and "Hleawe" or Law" a hill (Saxon) |
