008 | An old Kirk or Chapel with a Yard or burial ground attached to it About five Miles North of Newtonstewart are the ruins of a chapel which was built in 1508 by john Kenady of Blairquhan who dedicated it to St. Ninian and entered a Chaplaincy for the celebration of devine Service in it with an annual rent of £8.10.0 from the Barony of Alloway. This was Confirmed by the King's Charter 20th June 1508(Li Caledonia Vol 3 page 485) This is Still used as a burial ground by the poor inhabitants to a Small extent. ( I am told) a part of this Churchyard was taken of Cultivated Some years ago (which it is Said Caused great dissatisfaction) this is probable, as the enclosure now is Small in proportion to the foundation of the Church.
