This is one of four Schools erected in three different Parishes (two in Whitburn Ph [Parish] one in Cambusnethan & one in Shotts Ph. [Parish]) and supported by a Mortification of £3250, and a further sum of 1000 pounds by the late Mr James Wilson, Merchant Whitburn In addition to the above sums there are £40 £10 to each Scool, deposited in the sinking fund for enlarging repairing & as the trustees eight in number may deem necessary The present School was erected in 1820 and is a plain two storey building, slated and stands on the S. [South] side of the Edinburgh and Glasgow road a short distance E. [East] of Whitburn Village - Three children whose parents are not able to pay are taught free, and those who can pay small school fees - The Average attendance is about 160, 90 boys & 70 girls - besides a plain education, Latin, French, Geometry Geography, vocal Music & Stenography, The teacher has all the privileges of a Ph [Parish] Teacher, free house, garden etc but his Salary does not amount so high, he is also allowed two government teachers and is paid his share of the balance of the interest of the Mortification at the end of the Year after deduction expenses - Mr R. Leggat Teacher
