OS1/34/59/11 Supposed site of ST NICHOLAS'S CHURCH Supposed Site of St Nicholas's Church Revd. [Reverend] George Boag Uphall J Alexander Broxburn George Alexander Broxburn 006 This is pointed out by old residents in the locality as the supposed site of the ancient Parish Church of Strathbave - now Uphall which was dedicated to St. Nicholas. The Remains have been so long removed that the site cannot be pointed out to a few yards; however, all agree in stating that it stood in this field & on "the rising ground North from the Coal pit", as shown on Trace. The farm of Holygate evidently is so named from the Road or Lane which leads to this old church, or from a gate at the entrance to this lane: The lane now bears no name. The supposed site was pointed out by J & G Alexander and agreed to by the Revd. [Reverend] George Boag of Uphall. Turn over [continued on p 12]

OS1/34/59/12 [Page] 12 Parish of Uphall Sheet 6 No. 10 Trace 6 [Supposed Site of St Nicholas's Church - continued from page 11] "The old parish church was dedicated to St. Nicholas. It stood on the northern side of the village of Strathbrock seven hundred yards northeast from the mansion house of Kirkhill. It seems of old to have been of considerable value and in the ancient taxation it is rated at forty marks. The church was a rectory in early times. "The inscription on the bell if the old church is "Campanium Santi Nicholai de Stratbroke 1441," This bell which was removed from its ancient steeple to the New Church at Uphall clearly proves that the church was dedicated to St. Nicholas," Penney's History of Linlithgowshire, page 165.
