006 | This is pointed out by old residents in the locality as the supposed site of the ancient Parish Church of Strathbave - now Uphall which was dedicated to St. Nicholas. The Remains have been so long removed that the site cannot be pointed out to a few yards; however, all agree in stating that it stood in this field & on "the rising ground North from the Coal pit", as shown on Trace. The farm of Holygate evidently is so named from the Road or Lane which leads to this old church, or from a gate at the entrance to this lane: The lane now bears no name. The supposed site was pointed out by J & G Alexander and agreed to by the Revd. [Reverend] George Boag of Uphall. Turn over [continued on p 12] |
