[County] Map 002 ; 003 [Situation] On the South Side of the Firth of Forth A very Small parish on the coast of the Firth of Forth in the Co. [County] Linlithgow bounded on the north by the firth and on all other sides by Dalmeny. Even the parliamentary boundaries of the burgh enclose a mere stripe along the beach extending from an old quarry on the east to Echland Burn on the west an area of only a mile in extreme length and not more than about 250 yards in mean breadth, But the parochial territory comprehends not above one half of this area it is coextensive with the royalty and excludes parts of both ends of the town. As a territory it is in no part landward and in description it becomes identified with the burgh. A chapel of ease was anciently built here by Dundas of Dundas and still figures as an antiquity of the town. But the little district was separated from Dalmeny and erected into a parish only in 1636. It is in the presbytery of Linlithgow and Synod of Lothian

OS1/34/51/12 [Page] 12 "The parish was an erection from Dalmeny in the year 1636 ratified by Act of Parliament 1641 at which time the place seems to have acquired considerable importance in consequence of its commercial intercourse with Holland. At this time it possessed nearly twenty great ships with several coasting vessels of a smaller size. A church was built in 1633 on the ruins of a very ancient chapel. Some tombstones bear the date 1685 and one apparently of a much earlier period." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Co [County] Linlithgow page 3.

White 002 [Situation] In the central part of the burgh of Queensferry A plain substantial stone edifice erected by subscription in 1633 which date is over what was formerly the N. [North] entrance but now closed up, - on the W [West] end is a small belfry containing a bell on which is the following inscription. "Soli Deo gloria, Michael Burgerhuys makeit, David maerchant of Edinbruge, gifted this bell to the Kirk of the Queensferrie. Cursed be they that takes it frae here. Anno domino 1635." It was brought from Holland by the shipmasters. It is stated in the Statistical account that this church was built on the ruins of a very ancient Chapel, but I can glean no information respecting it. When repair the seats some years ago they found graves of children and adults under the floor of the building. It was the custom formerly of interring the dead in the body of the edifice. The only notice of it I could discover is in a title deed in the possession of Mr Broomfield baker and there it is called St Nicholas Kirk. Mr Miller of Linlithgow Town Clerk of Queensferry made out the deed. The living is in the gift of the Magistrates and Town Council and £50 is allowed to the incumbent to rent a house, there is no manse.
OS1/34/51/13 [Page] 13 Queensferry -- Sheet 2 No 16 Trace 3 [Note on page] The date on stone in the church wall is 1633 quite plain. I have seen the charter belonging to Mr Broomfield. It is copied from the town Records the words are "St Nicholas' KirK and KirK yard." Mr Broomfield says that the present church is erected on the site of the "old KirK". It should therefore be written Church (1633) on the site of St Nicholas' KirK. (Signed) M. Duggan C. Asst. [Civilian Assistant]
