A large tower which forms a very conspicuous object standing on the Terrace at the W. [West] end of High Street to the entrance of which is a flight of stone steps and attached to which is the court room for the transaction of Public business - it contains two bills and a public cloak, in the basement story there is a Lockup in charge of the Town Constable the date or its erection is not Known

This is merely the place opposite the Town Hall where anything of a public nature is proclaimed by the Town Crier and where public proclamations are posted against the side of the steeple of the Town Hall. It does not derive its name from the Knowledge of a "cross" ever have stood in the locality.
