010 [Situation] West end of the village of Livingston
A large plain building two stories high having a gallery at each end, and a belfry on its West end; all in middling repair. It is surrounded by a graveyard, and there are two family vaults attached to the North side of the body of the church, the east one belongs to the Cunninghames, who were the ancient proprietors of Livingstone, the other one belongs to the family of Pitcairn, Nether Dechmont. The church bears date 1732, at which time it was rebuilt. The old church was a Catholic place of worship before the Reformation. The Revd. [Reverend] Robert Maitland Robertson is the minister, his stipend about £200, £50 of which he gives to the Revd. [Reverend] John Gardner his Assistant and Successor; the latter receives £30 more from the heritors, both of which sums form his stipend. The church is large enough to afford accommodation for about 300, the average number of communicants about 130, and the average number of attendants about 100. The Earl of Roseberry is the patron.
