OCHILTREE PLACE or OCHILTREE CASTLE | Ochiltree Place Ochiltree Place Ochiltree Castle Ochiltree Castle |
Mr. Robertson Occupier Rent Receipt Mrs Auld Wester Ochiltree Mr Wilson Riccarton |
005 | [Situation] About ⅞ mile E. by S. [East by South] of Riccarton. This is one of the class of buildings denominated Peel, it is 3 storeys high, and the walls are about 5 feet thick, the basement floor being arched, on the west and south side it is surmounted by a turret, the entrance is from the west, above which is a coat of arms, but whose arms they represent cannot be ascertained. they are not those of Lord Roseberry; there is a date on the South side 1610, but the present occupier (who is not very intelligent) states that he has heard it was built long before that period and also that it was supposed to have been a summer residence of King James the Sixth; it appears at the present time to be in a good state of preservation as about 45 years ago during the time of the present occupier, it underwent a thorough repair; it is now used as a farm house and there are extensive outhouses and offices attached, with a thrashing machine, all being in very excellent repair, contiguous to the Castle are several Cottages occupied by agricultural laborers, there is also a smithy. The Earl of Roseberry who is the proprietor names the building Ochiltree Place, but it is more generally known and spoken of in the locality as Ochiltree Castle. I could glean no further information either in the vicinity or in Linlithgow concerning it, but I believe there is something mentioned about Ochiltree Castle in a small book called Penney's History of Linlithgow, a copy of which I cannot obtain. The present occupier is Mr James Robertson. |

Note. It appears that this place is indiscriminately
called Ochiltree Place or Ochiltree Castle
and also that the house is an ancient
Baronial residence or Castle called Ochiltree
Castle. - Therefore the name had better be written
Ochiltree Place or Ochiltree Castle. The former as
the modern name to be written in Stump & the latter
as the ancient name to be written in German text
any other arrangement would be attended with
disagreeable repetition.
