[Almanac] Chalmer's Caledonia Fullarton's Gazetteer 001 ; 002 ; 005 ; 006 [Situation] In the N.W. [North West] portion of the parish of Linlithgow A parish in the County of Linlithgow of nearly a Square form its sides parallel with the lines of latitude and longitude, with a projection on the west side. Its area is supposed to be about 7,600 Scottish Acres. The parish is bounded on the north by Borrowstounness, Carriden, and Abercorn on the east by Abercorn and the eastern part of Ecclesmachan on the south by Uphall, the western part of Ecclesmachan and Bathgate and on the west by Torphichen and Stirlingshire. The Surface towards the south is hilly or gently upland and at a distance of from 1 to 1¾ mile from the southern boundary Sends up what in a Champaign County like West Lothian are noticeable summits. Coal abounds in several parts of and excellent limestone is worked in the South. A silver mine in the Southern extremity is Said to have anciently yielded much wealth to the Haddington family. OS1/34/43/4 LINLITHGOW Continued produce during the time of Linlithgow being a royal residence are Still in the repositories of the Curious. The place where the metal was Smelted is Still Called Silver-mill, but the ore is either exhausted or hitherto has eluded modern Search. Linlithgow gives name to a presbytery in the Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale Patron the Crown. There are no detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions of other parishes within it.

[South East] of the River Avon; it is three Storeys high with a Small Courtyard Surrounded on all sides And is entered by An Arched Gateway, the grounds around the house are Well Wooded but not very Ornamental, the house is in excellent repair. In front of the house on the flat along the river side the battle of Linlithgow Bridge Commenced in 1526, and near which the River was forded by the Lennox party. Opposite the ancient Priory of Manuel, in Stirlingshire. The Stables & a large Vegetable are a short distance W. [West] of the house.

Blair Esqre. & Provost Hardy state that the name is a Corruption of "Bieldside", Bield being a shelter - the name Meaning the sheltry side - And the Situation tends to Confirm this explanation. WWK

[North] by W.[West] of the village of Linlithgow Bridge A spring of fine pure water and is situated at the bottom of a Steep brae or bank On the E. [East] side of the River Avon & S. [South] of Avon Print Works. It is enclosed with stone.
OS1/34/43/13 LINLITHGOW BRIDGE Linlithgow Bridge Linlithgow Bridge J Hardy Esqre. Provost Mr. J. Burns 005 [Situation] On the River Avon, on the Western boundary of the Co. [County] Linlithgow This bridge is situated a Mile W.[West] of the town of Linlithgow on the Falkirk and Glasgow Road, it spans the River Avon W [West] of a small Village of the Same name, it consists of one large & lofty Arch with a span of Sixty feet and is Kept in excellent repair, close to the roadway in the South battlement, and immediately over the Centre of the Arch, is inserted a stone being the date 1626, the year in which the present structure was erected. This bridge and the locality were the scene of a Sanguinary Conflict between the Earls of Angus & Lennox for the possession of the Young King James 5, which ended in the defeat of Lennox. The Customs of this Bridge are let by public roup every three Years.

Therefore the date here given may be that of the Rebuilding or extensive repairs of it. Perhaps it may not be unobjectionable to write this name on plans as an antiquity.

[East] bank of the River Avon, half a Mile N[North] of Linlithgow Bridge, it was first established about 70 Years ago, but has been extended Considerably Since the buildings Are of different heights, ranging from One to three Storeys high, and built for the most part without Order or Regularity. It Consists of the different departments forming a Calico Printing establishment, Such as Color houses, Block Cutting shop, Printing Shop, Engine & Mill House, Press House, Designing, Bleaching, dyeing & Finishing houses, and drying sheds, the majority of the buildings are in but indifferent repair

OS1/34/43/15 AVON PRINT WORKS Continued It is worKed both by Steam and Water power - there are two water wheels, one, 16 feet by 4 and the other 12 feet in diameter by 4 in breadth, the engine being one of nine horse power - the greater portion of the buildings are in but middling repair. It is at present in the hands of Mr. Jas. [James] Stewart, Glasgow, but who has a dwelling house at the WorKs, a neat stone built, slated dwelling two Storeys high and of modern erection. The property of Coll. [Colonel] Hamilton, Cathlaw, near Torphichen. It is told of Burns, the Scottish Poet, that he ordered a dress and Shawl of a peculiar pattern to be Manufactured at this Print Works as a present to his "Bonnie Jean". This told in the locality and also at the Works by the Manager And Others.

[East] Side of the River Avon from the the W. [West] side of which the Avon Viaduct Commences, the W. [West] & South Sides are very steep the latter being Covered with Mixed wood, this hill rises high above the Burgh Mills, and at the formation of the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway Several Stone Coffins Containing human remains were found Were dug up, the Railway passes right over the Summit - tradition states that peace was ratified here after the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge

The Village Contains a few small shops but has nither school nor Church, the children being sent into Linlithgow to be educated.

[East] bank of the River Avon and close to base of the Avon Viaduct, they Consist of a flour Mill and One for grinding Oats & barley, the former is three storeys high & is worked by Water & Steam power, the engine is of 10 horse power & the water Wheel is 16 feet by 4. the latter Mill is only One storey high and worKed by a Water Wheel 14 feet by 4. They are the property of the Town of Linlithgow.

A very fine structure Supporting the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway across a Valley & through which the River Avon flows, it is a short distance South of Linlithgow Bridge and Consists of 23 lofty Arches, twenty of them having a span of about 50 feet and the other three at the E. [East] end being Only 24 feet wide, the height of the rails Over the bed of the River is about 100 feet. Six of the Arches including the three Small Are On the Linlithgow Side of the River, three of them across the River Avon and the Remaining 14 are on the Stirlingshire Side, it is built of a hard Whitish Sandstone.

[County] Linlithgow p172 005 [Situation] On the east Side of the River Avon The battle was fought between the Earls of Angus & Lennox, with their adherents for the possession of the Young King James 5. Lennox Sought to deliver him from the power of the Douglasses And for this purpose he was marching an Army of ten thousand men to enter Edinburgh, but when arriving at Linlithgow Bridge he found it So well guarded & protected by Artillery that he was forced to ford a difficult part of the River Avon about A Mile farther South and nearly Opposite the Old Priory of Manuel in Stirlingshire - the banks being high the Lennox party was thrown into Confusion Which was the ultimate Cause of

OS1/34/43/22 BATTLE OF LINLITHGOW BRIDGE Continued 005 of their defeat. The battle raged along the River Side in the Avontoun grounds to the Bridge, near to which the Young Monarch was stationed and Where the Most Sanguinary part of the Contest took place. The Lennox Party was Completely defeated, the Chief himself being Severely Wounded. James, Who it Appears was attached to Lennox, Ordered him to be spared & accorded him the Royal Pardon, but Sir James Hamilton neglecting or despising this Act of Mercy, Afterwards slew the Earl in Cold blood. It is Said he was buried where he fell, a spot Outside the road in the Corner of a field On the N. [North] of Kettleston and S.E. [South East] of the Avontoun grounds; near the entrance lodge - it Was long distinguished by a Cairn of Stones Accumulated most probably by passers bye Casting a stone on his grave to testify their abhorrence of the treacherous Act. Several Stone Coffins have been found in the locality, Containing human Remains and between the Bridge And the Avon Print Works a Sword Was Also found but broken.

OS1/34/43/23 [Page] 23 "In the year 1526 the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge was fought between the faction of the Earl of Angus who had possession of the person of James 5, then a minor and the party who South to deliver the Prince from the influence of the Douglasses. The Conflict began on the haugh of Manuel but the main Conflict was close by the village of Linlithgow Bridge which has given its name to the engagement. The Earl of Lennox the Chief of the party opposed to Angus was after being promised quarter Slain by Sir James Hamilton. The place of his interment was long Known as Lennox's Cairn." - The new Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Co. [County] Linlithgow p.172 "Nearly a mile north west of the town is the Scene of a Sanguinary Conflict began opposite the Priory of Manuel but fought out here between the Earls of Arran and of Lennox during the minority of James 5. Though the precise spot cannot now be exactly identified it was long distinguished by one of those rude memorials to which every passenger contributed a stone and which was called Lennox's Cairn. Near this spot and possibly identical with it is a field anciently used for military exercises and feats and still called the Joisting Haugh." - Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland. In 1526 the Earl of Angus defeated the Earl of Lennox at Linlithgow Bridge where Lennox's Cairn long distinguished the disastrous Scene of his fall. - Chalmer's Caledonia Vol.II p.259 "Battle near Linlithgow Bridge. - This was fought between the Earls of Lennox and Arran during the minority of James V. It was established in 1808 and is for the manufacture of Printing and Cartridge paper Only. It embraces the different departments Connected paper Making viz - Sorting, Cutting, Carding, Engine, Machine, Bleaching and Finishing Rooms. The Mill is worked by Steam & Water. [North East] of Stock Bridge and terminating close on the S.W.[South West] of Longcroft House. It is formed by two small ridges of hill & On the One N.[North] is a trig [trigonometrical] Station. There was formerly a pond in the bottom of this glen but has been drained Many Years ago by the tenant Mr. J Inglis. Here it is said Courts of Justice were held in former Ages from which probably the name Arose.

[West] of Stockbridge, One of the dwellings is two storeys high & slated; the Other is One Storey high & thatched both in good repair with a vegetable garden attached. Tradition states, the way it acquired this name, was, that a large stone stood Some Where in the locality having a hole in it, and in Which the Standard of the party in charge of the Young King James 5, Was fixed at the battle of Linlithgow Bridge. A small field West of the dwellings bears the Same Name.

A Cairn of stones long marked this spot where he was slain & buried but all traces of it has disappeared.
