W. Blair Esqr Avontoun Mr. R. Easton West Port Linlithgow. New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |
005 | [Situation] About 30 Chains S.W [South West] by W [West] of West Port Tradition points to this place as the spot where the Earl of Lennox, who sought to deliver the Young King, James 5 from the power of the Douglasses, was treacherously slain by Sir James Hamilton after the battle of Linlithgow Bridge, although the Royal Pardon had been Accorded to Lennox, it was either neglected in the flush of Victory, or despised by Hamilton. A Cairn of stones long marked this spot where he was slain & buried but all traces of it has disappeared. |
