009 [Situation] In the centre of the parish of Bathgate.
A small but thriving town situated at the base of a low range of hills on the N [North] of the Edinburgh and Glasgow road 18 miles from the former and 23 from the latter The N.W. [North West] is the old portion of the town and is built very close and irregular but the East of the town is modern and well built, the streets are wide, running nearly at right angles to each other and containing a number of very good general shops - Public houses, Inns and one large Hotel and Posting house - The town is lighted with gas and is well supplied with excellent water, rising off beds
