009 [Situation] Adjoining the Farm Ho [House] of Couston

Immediately adjoining the farm steading of North Couston are the Ruins of an old Castle, only the Walls of it now standing, which are about 4 feet thick and 16 feet high, very little information can be obtained in the locality concerning it. Mr. John Tod the occupier of North Couston states that about 10
years ago he gave an account in a Newspaper called Dick's Advertiser that was then published weekly in Linlithgow that Professor Simpson of Edinburgh had, while in London, seen some of the old Scottish Records in which mention was made of "Couston Castle" in the County of Linlithgow, as belonging in the time of Wallace to the faithless Andrew of Couston, who it appeared was called the faithless from his having sworn allegiance to Edward the First, while invading Scotland and immediately upon Wallace raising the Standard he joined him
it was stated also that Wallace frequently slept in the Castle: this information was supplied to Mr. Dick of Linlithgow by Professor Simpson. Mr. Dick lately resided in Linlithgow but emigrated to Australia.
