This is the Remains of an Ancient Tower or small Castle, once belonging to a Family of the Dalyell's, and subsequ [subsequently] to one of Dundas. The Tower is in tolerable preservation; but the remain [remaining] part of the building is much dilapi [dilapidated] only the basement storey, which is Vau [Vaulted] and pierced with loopholes, remains and is used as a Deer Shed. The Build [Building] does not appear to have been any larger than its present extent: but must ha [have] had outbuildings etc which are all removed. It is situated on an Eminence in the Deer Park. The date of its erection is unknown |

A small building one storey high, having a belfry at its west end; all in good repair. It is large enough to afford accommodation for about 250, the average number of communicants is about 106, the average number of attendants is about 80. Revd. [Reverend] A. Currie is the minister, he receives his stipend from the Sustentation Fund. A portion of the church is partitioned off for the purpose of a school, large enough for about 80, the average number of attendants is about 80. The branches taught are English, Latin, French, Mathematics, etc. John Drummond the schoolmaster has a government allowance and the school fees for his salary, there is also a pupil teacher who has a government allowance. |

This is a small village on the main road from Linlithgow to Queensferry. It is formed by one row of houses, with others detached they are all built of freestone, gener [generally] one storey high, with small garden ground behind; for the most part occupied by the proprietors, they are erected upon feus from the Earl of Hopetoun. In the Village is an Inn called the Duddingston Arms, a grocer's shop and a Smithy. Two farms from their position in regard to the Village are called N & S [North & South] Newton. |

Formerly this was the mansion house and offices of the estate of Duddingston; but a few years ago the estate became the property of the Earl of Hopetoun, who converted the mansion into a dwelling house and the offices into a farm Steading. The whole of the buildings are of a uniform style of architecture, the Gothic. South of the house is the garden. The present tenant is Mr. John Archibald, farmer. |
