094 This name applies to a hill situated about one half mile West of the Free Church at Lairg and pointed out as the site of the Battle of Gruids which took place between A.D. 1519 & 1522 & Its present appearance would tend to confirm this, as the slopes upon all sides are studded with Tumuli amongst which are to be seen several Hut Circles. 094 This name applies to the site of the "Battle of Gruids which took place between A.D. 1519 & 1522 in which Alexander Master of Sutherland defeated John McKay of Strathnaver. Again John McKay thinking to repair his losses and disgraces which he had always received in Sutherland, he assembled his Countymen and invaded Breachat, Alexander Gordon Master of Sutherland convincing his men with greater diligence than the enemy expected, and met with McKay at the Gruids. After a sharp skirmish, McKay was overthrown divers of his men slain, and the rest chased untill they came to Dirie-Moir" vide [see] Sir R.
