This name applies to a mountainous, moorish, and rugged parish situated in the extreme north of Sutherland Shire. Its greatest length from Cape Wrath in the North to Ben Hee in the South-east is about twenty five miles and its average breadth about Eleven miles, it is bounded on the north by the North Sea or Northern Ocean, on the East by the Parish of Tongue, on the West and South by the Phs [Parishes] of of Lairg and Edderachylis. Lochs Hope, Eireboll and the Kyle of Durness are the principal sheets of water, the former Fresh and the latter two salt, there are three small districts which are partly Cultivated vis; " Durine, Sangomor and Sangobeag." The only Straths worthy of notice being Strath Mor, Strathbeag & Strath Dionard, all of which are under sheep pasture. The Hills in this Parish are pretty steep and vary in height from fifteen hundred to three thousand feet, the most Conspicious of which is Beinn Hope. The Parish consits of Gneiss, Salurian rocks and primitive limestone the latter being found on the East side of Loch Erriboll & in and around the village of Durness. Two schools supply the educational wants of th parish and there is only one house licensed for the Sale of Spirits two of the last named buildings are within a short distance of the Ph. [Parish] church.
The parish of Durness is in the Presbytery of Tongue, Synod of Sutherland and Caithness. There are no detached portions of the parish of Durness, And there are no detached portions of any other parish situated within it.
