This is the county town of Sutherland and it is a royal burgh granted by Charter of Charles II dated 1628. It is also an old cathedral city. The date of its erection into a see is not, nor, cannot be ascertained. The town is situated on a sandy plain at the mouth of the Dornoch Firth and in the parish of the same name. The streets (nameless) are wide and well-formed possessing some well-built houses, principally two stories in height and nearly all slated. The following are the principal and most remarkable [continued on page 4] |

Tradition tells us that the palace extended to the cathedral on the north side and to the east occupied the space now taken up by the County Buildings. Until the present prison was built part of this building was used as a prison. At present one storey is used as an Armoury for the Dornoch Volunteers. The rest is shut up and in bad condition. The date of its erection cannot be ascertained. |

Joseph PeacocK Esqr. Golspie |
|
Applies to the Remains of an Ancient Castle situated on a large mound or Eminence north of and adjacent to the Farm of Proncy, this mound Appears to have been thrown up specially for building the Castle thereon, very little of this Ancient building now remains and the only portion stands only a few feet above the ground and is banked over with Earth, and covered with rough grass, There is a peice of rubble masonry lying near the Remains also it is So firmly Knitted together that heavy blows with a hammer failed to breaK it assunder, A stone which if the date upon it be correct (and there seems to be little doubt as to its authenticity) will go far to prove the age of the Castle, it was found Some Years ago among the Remains by Mr William Gunn present tenant of Proncy farm, and it bears the date 1000, with the letters A.S. and C.S. cut thereon, it is now built into the West Gable of the Servants house at Proncy farmsteading, it is Supposed to have been a portion of a mantlepiece. property of His Grace the DuKe of Sutherland. |

"The castle of SKibo, once a residence of the Bishops of Caithness and Sunderland, was
demolished in the last century. Within its walls the celebrated Marquis of Montrose was
confined subsequent to his being taken in Assynt; and from SKibo he was conveyed
to Edinburgh, where he was executed."
From this it appears that the present castle is of modern erection. |

Astail - Submitted again in Sheet 108 to the Revd. [Reverend] J.M. Joass who now recommends Astail
Although not collected on the ground. I have no
doubt Asdale is the correct form of this name
which is Norse (= hollow or valley) but has been
turned into Gaelic (= dwelling) - a number of
adjoining names depend upon these.

Although I did not collect this name on the ground I have no doubt it should be Torroboll - it has been erroneously turned into Gaelic - Torboll or Torrboll is undoubtedly a Norse name but the examiner wrote the last syllable so as to read bal insteal of bol. the former being a gaelic - the latter a Norse termination - and given an imaginary meaning to the name - which was turned into Gaelic in the office. Extracts from the Old Statistical Account Vol. [Volume] 8. page 1
The Town and parish of Dornoch derive their name from the Gaelic
words Dorn-Eich, which signifies a horse's foor or hoof; concerning which
the current tradition is as follows: About the year 1259, the Danes and

small vessels lie in safety, with tolerable weather, as well as near the Meikle

Parish of Dornoch Co. [County] of Sutherland ------- Examiners Replies to each of the underlined portions
Extracts from Fullarton's Gazetteer
[continued from page 129]
Dornoch, a royal burgh in the above parish, is situated on the
north coast of the frith of Dornoch, nearly opposite to the burgh of Tain
which lies on the south side of the frith. It is literally a village, con-
sisting of a church, a gaol, and a very few houses; and has been decreasing
for several years although it is the county town, and the seat of the Sheriff
Depute. By charter of Charles II., dated July 14th 1628. Dornoch was

arty, and Kirkwall, it unites in sending a member to parliament.
The property of the burgh consists of the links in the neighbourhood,
which, for the year 1832-3, were let by public roup for the sum of £2-1.s The
rest of the annual income is derived from custom and market dues, but
these being inadequate to defray the expense, the difference is made up by
the Duke of Sutherland. A claim is made for a very extensive and
apparently undefined royalty, greatly exceeding the parliamentary boundaries;
but the territory over which jurisdiction has been exercised is understood ------- The Magistrates appoint

time of the erection of the See is not ascertained. Andrew, bishop of Caithness,
is witness to a donation by David I. to the monastery of Dunfermline. He

Christian captives; to which purpose a third part of their revenue
is said to have been destined. Of 13 of these monasteries, which
