Creich Manse

The old records give every possible spelling
Crech, Creech, Crich, Creich, Creach, Crioch,
As the same M.S.S. [Manuscripts] gives different spelling it
is clear the writer has no Standard
Meaning of word.
1 Crioch (i sounds e in Gaelic) gives in sound
Crioch (signifying a boundary, or terminus)
is applicable to the parish (it originally included
Assynt) & was thus the boundary between
the counties of Ross & Sutherland
2 Craobh = a tree, Creich was better wooded
than the neighbouring parishes - but that
would give the plural craobhan = but
this is distinctly a particular tree some hold
the parish takes its name from an old
oak in Spinningdale - but the word appears
in records older than the oak.
For nearly Two centuries it has invariably been
spelt Creich & it seems as near finality as possible
