097 Applied to a ford on the River Brora Situated a short distance from the East end of Loch Brora "There is a tradition in the district that the neighbourhood was invaded by a numerous army of Caithness men which the inhabitants were not prepared to resist, upon this occasion they fled to an Island upon the loch for an asylum where they were secure from the assaults of the enemy. Upon this the invaders were so enraged that they attempted daming up the narrow mouth of the Loch at which the River breaks out, and had made such progress in the night time to accomplish their escape, and the part of the River at which they had been employed retains to this day the name of Dàm or Davan. It signifies the stoppage. His Grace the DuKe of Sutherland proprietor
