OS1/32/24/1 Stirling Stirling Stirling Stirling Stirling Mr. William Galbraith, Town Clerk Revd. [Reverend] William Findlay Revd. [Reverend] Mr. McLachlan Statistical Account 010 The town of Stirling is one of the oldest in Scotland, being coeval with the Castle which, crowning the eminence on which the town was erected, was well qualified to afford it protection and shield it from the broils of that troublesome era. In later times the Castle became the occasional residence of the Royal family of Scotland, which tended to increase and extend the town. "The etymology of the name is uncertain. The names Stirling and Strivilin or Stryviling were, at one period, both in use - both occurring in the same act of Parliament: The place was also, at a very early period, know by the name of Snowdon." OS1/32/24/2 STIRLING Stirling Stirling Stirling Stirling Mr. William Galbraith, Town Clerk Revd. [Reverend] William Findlay Revd. [Reverend] Mr. McLachlan Statistical Account 010 [Continued] Standing on the slope of a hill with springs from the flat Carse of Stirling, towards the south-east, and terminates abruptly at the north-western ramparts of the Castle, reaching an elevation of 220 feet in the distance of a quarter of a mile, its position is exceedingly picturesque, commanding views which stretch far away over the cultivated plain - flat, but varied by the tortuous windings of the Forth, until Ben Lomond, Ben Ledi, the Ochill and other hills form bold backgrounds to the beautiful landscapes. It has a harbour on the River Forth, but the trafic is small. The railway trafic is, however, very great, being borne by the Scottish Central, which passes through the town, and the Forth & Clyde Junction and the Stirling and Dunfermline Railway which commence here. The chief support of the town is derived from supplying the wants of the agricultural community who surround it on the very rich and highly cultivated carse of Stirling, there being no export manufactures nor peculiar trade. A very well-attended grain and general Market is held every Friday, and several Cattle fairs throughout the year.
OS1/32/24/3 STIRLING Stirling Stirling Stirling Stirling Mr. William Galbraith, Town Clerk Revd. [Reverend] William Findlay Revd. [Reverend] Mr. McLachlan Statistical Account 010 [Continued] The streets are well lighted with gas - in the lower part of the town they are well paved and the footways flagged and broad, but in the old, or upper part, from the contracted footways, caused by the narrowness of the streets, passengers are frequently (in some parts always) compelled to walk in the carriage ways, which are dangerous for horses from being of very severe gradients. On this account the first-class trade is gradually sliding down the hill to the more level and fasionable part of the town. The upper part is also in a very bad sanitary condition. Water is conveyed from the Touch Hills, three miles distant from the town - it is of good quality and abundantly supplied to the inhabitants both in their houses and by public wells or taps in the streets. The Police, although not long established, are very effective. A Garrison of three or four hundred are generally quartered in the Castle, and add to the bustle of the town. The town is considered very healthy; and on account of the historical interest of its Castle; the splendid scenery; its vicinage to that fashionable

The Charter of Mortification is lost, and the Amount unknown. The funds were laid Out in lands in the neighbourhood of the town. The revenue Amounting to about £400 is Applied to the relief principally of decayed members of the Crafts of Stirling, whether resident or not. The house belonging to it, in which also, as Appears from some old records of the Kirk Session, the persons enjoying the benefit of the Charity at one period, is that known by the name of the Trades Hall, in Spittal Square or Cowan's Yard. OS1/32/24/71 River Forth River Forth River Forth River Forth Mr William Galbraith Town Clerk Revd [Reverend] William Findlay Revd [Reverend] Mr McLachlan 010.15 ; 017.03 "The River Forth has its Source from a Spring in the Northern Side of Benlomond, near the Summit of the Mountain. It traverses Stirlingshire for ten Miles from its Source, under the Appellation of the Water of Deuchray, Augmented, as it proceeds, by numberless mountain Streams. It then enters Perthshire, where it receives an Accession equal to the volume of its own Waters, in the river which issues from Lochard in Aberfoyle. It there assumes the name of Avendorr, or Black Water. After a Course of about five miles, it Again joins Stirlingshire below Gartmore House, where it obtains the name of Forth, which it henceforth retains. From this point, the Forth uniformly bounds the County of Stirling on the North, except in a few instances, of Some isolated tracts which lie to the North of that River. A few miles Above Stirling, the Feath or Feith, the Faichers of the historian Buchannan, and the Avon Thaich of the highlanders, a large and beautiful river rising in Perthshire, notwithstanding its undeniable Superiority, Sinks both its Waters as far as Stirling. The River is navigable to vessels of About 70 tons burden, but this navigation is rendered extremely inconvenient by the numerous Windings (here called links) of the Forth. The line of the river from Alloa is reckoned near twenty miles, whilst the distance in a direct line is Scarcely Seven. After a Course of about eight miles from Stirling Bridge, the River Stretches out into a firth of of Several miles in breadth, affording facilities for navigation and for Commerce upon an enlarged Scale." It Stood outside the town wall. The Church belonging to the Convent was, for above two hundred and fifty years, the Chief place of Worship for the inhabitants of the town, and adjoining to it was the Common burial Place. Only Persons of distinction were buried in the Church. Duncan, the aged Earl of Livenage, with his son in law Murdae, Duke of Albany, and Walter and Alexander Stewarts Sons of the Duke by Duncan's daughter, were executed upon the Gowling Hill in 1425 and buried in this Church, on the South Side of the great Alter. A person who had personated Richard II, and under that Character, been entertained Several years at the Courts of Robert III, and of the first Regent Albany, having died in the Castle in 1420, was interred at the horn of the Great Alter. The spot where both the convent and burial place were, has long been used as a garden, where great quantities of human bones have often been found.
