017.03 | "Stirling was formerly protected by a Wall, but the present Wall and rampart around it, (the remains of which only stand visible here and there) was built in the minority of King James VI by one of his favourites, the Earl of Arran, to add to his own Security & ran from the South-east corner of the Rock of the Castle, Along the South Side of the Hill, until it joined the South port, when there was an arched way of ponderous masonry, on which a huge iron gate was hung." History of Stirling. There are only Seven Small portions of the town Wall Standing at the present time, which are Situated on the North Side of the Back Walk in plans 17.3.14 & 15, and are in good preservation. One of the Old Watch Towers Still remains and is likewise in good preservation. It is Situated immediately at the South end of the Garden adjoining Allans School, and is at the present time used as a magazine by some Iron Mongers of the town. |
