010 | [Continued] watering-place - The Bridge of Allen, and its being in the direct route to the Trossachs and the Highlands, it is visited by some thousands of tourists every Summer. The population is about thirteen thousand. It contains 12 Churches, 9 Schools, and 2 Reading rooms, and is, by Railway, 29 miles distant from Glasgow and 36 from Edinburgh. The date of its charter as a Royal Burgh is not known, but one exists, granting additional privileges, by Alexander I, and dated at Kincardine, August 18th 1120. |
